the Egyptian Women’s Movement
Tebaa 6th volume
This volume of Tebaa about the Egyptian Women’s Movement, provides an introduction to the proceeding seventh volume. In the study of the international or the Egyptian women’s movements, we would like to highlight that they are a part of the larger social and political movements. They therefore influence one another and are greatly interrelated. As such, this volume starts off by firstly, providing definitions to the concept of social movements in general, and secondly, by providing a short study of the most fundamental concepts to it. These concepts are considered as an introduction to all the mentioned studies in this volume and in the following.
The article, “The influence of International Women’s Movements on International Relations”, raises a large number of questions on the national and global context. For example, it looks at the western Gender concepts and their role in influencing a woman’s position in the third world. Additionally, the article provides an accurate study characterized by originality and seriousness of what may be as alert for the south countries against attraction and containment dangers whether by the governments or by international policies.
The article, “The Feminist Movement in Contemporary Palestine between Colonial and National Disputes and Islamic ones”, discusses the secular Feminist Movements in their relation to the Islamic feminist movements and non-feminist ones. The article concludes that the Islamic movements’ marginalization by the dominant national urban forces has, in effect, resulted in their increased popularity amongst the rural poor and the Palestinian refugee-camp residents.
The article, “The union of the Sudanese woman and war in empty rooms”, draws attention to this African country which has deep historical links to Egypt. The article also focuses on the role of Islamic movements in affecting the feminist movements in the Arabic and Islamic world. By looking at the Sudanese case, in comparison to the Palestinian case of the previous article, it presents that the influence of the Islamic trend affects the women’s movements differently, depending on each country’s social and political context
This volume of Tebaa looks at the disputes of the Arab secular and Islamic Feminist Movements, in comparison to other such movements and other religious movements which are the in Poland, like the Catholic Movement. This idea is tackled in a research entitled “Lost among Waves”, which presents the Catholic Church’s influence in Poland, as well as, its overwhelming desire to become a member of the European Union in the post-Soviet Union stage . The discussion then travels from Poland to South Asia, where the study, “The Southern Asian Perspective” presents a very rich study of the women’s movements situation in South Asia, as a result of the national and global challenges. Such challenges are the stringent poverty situation and the lack of resources on the national level, which in turn results in women’s suffering in particular.
Moreover, the article “The Women’s Movement of Nepal” sheds light on the challenges faced by the women’s movement in Nepal. Most of these challenges are an effect of the patriarchal society of the country. This editorial article, which is a part of a set of studies on the Nepalese history and society, focuses on the social class differences that increase the social strain in the country.
Finally, the book Democratization and popular women’s movements, introduces a review of different works of the women’s movements. It looks at their relations vis-à-vis the government and the effect of the democratic systems of the governance, or lack thereof, on the success of the popular women’s movements. This volume also introduces the abstract to an important book which discusses the women’s movement in the post Soviet Union countries.
